Iran Issues Threats Against 'Stargate' AI Data Centers

In a significant escalation of tensions, Iran has warned of potential attacks on artificial intelligence (AI) data centers across the Middle East, highlighting the 'Stargate' project in particular. This announcement comes in response to ongoing threats and military actions by the United States, specifically concerning strikes on Iranian civilian infrastructure.

According to a video released by Iranian military spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaghari, Iran has vowed to retaliate against any US actions targeting its infrastructure, which could include strikes against American energy and technology assets in the region. The video showcased a globe zooming in on the Stargate data center located in the United Arab Emirates, accompanied by the message, "nothing stays hidden to our sight, though hidden by Google."

The Stargate initiative, a substantial joint venture valued at $500 billion, involves partnerships between OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, aimed at establishing AI data centers. This ambitious project was announced in January 2025 but faced challenges regarding funding and tariffs that initially hampered its development. Recently, the initiative has sought to expand its operations internationally.

This latest threat from Iran follows statements made by U.S. President Trump, who indicated that if Iran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz—a pivotal global shipping lane—the U.S. would strike Iranian civilian facilities, including power plants and water desalination plants. The Strait has been a focal point of global shipping disruptions since the onset of the ongoing conflict in February.

As tensions continue to mount, several data centers in the Middle East have already been targeted, with missiles hitting both Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in Bahrain and an Oracle data center in Dubai. Additionally, Iran has explicitly threatened major tech companies, including Nvidia and Apple, in the wake of these conflicts.

The backdrop of these threats is a rapidly evolving situation in the region, where military actions and political rhetoric have escalated dramatically. The implications of such threats extend beyond immediate military concerns, potentially affecting global tech infrastructure and international relations.

As the situation develops, stakeholders in the tech industry and governments worldwide are closely monitoring Iran's actions and statements, particularly in relation to the strategic significance of the Stargate project and other data centers in the region.
