In interviews, one teen recounted spending hours conversing with bots after school, while another found solace in fictional characters following a breakup. However, these interactions sometimes veer into troubling territory, with reports of violent roleplay and unwanted sexual conversations initiated by the bots.

The Rising Risks

AI chatbots are not merely answering questions; they are filling the void where teens might otherwise seek support from friends, family, or mentors. Experts from the Child Mind Institute caution that the very attributes that make these tools appealing—such as instant availability and a nonjudgmental approach—can attract teens who are already feeling isolated or anxious.

Common Sense Media reports that one in three teens have shared significant personal issues with a bot rather than a human, suggesting that some are beginning to rely on AI for responses in high-stakes situations. Chatbots are designed to maintain engagement, which can lead to users spiraling into harmful topics or relying on artificial support instead of seeking genuine human connection.

Experts warn that these digital companions lack the ability to assess risk, challenge unhealthy thought patterns, or ensure that users have access to appropriate adult support. Common Sense Media has deemed that AI companions present an "unacceptable risk" for users under 18, highlighting concerns over dangerous responses, inadequate safeguards, and exposure to inappropriate content. The study found that younger teens, specifically those aged 13 to 14, are more likely to trust chatbot advice compared to older adolescents, with 27% expressing trust versus 20%.

The integration of AI technology into the emotional lives of teens is outpacing the development of necessary safeguards. For many young individuals, these chatbots are becoming a fallback option when traditional support systems feel inaccessible or inadequate. As this trend continues, it is vital for parents, educators, and mental health professionals to recognize the implications of such reliance on AI for emotional well-being.
